Hazel I. Smith

1916-2005 -- She made her home in Phillips and Avon for most of her life
FARMINGTON -- Hazel I. Smith, 88, of Phillips, died July 29, 2005, at Franklin Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient for a day, following a short illness.She was born in Kingfield, Sept. 1, 1916, the daughter of Otis and Elizabeth (McKay) Eames. She was educated in the schools of Kingfield, North Anson and Stratton.She married Paul Smith on Jan. 7, 1934 in Phillips; he died Jan. 14, 1961.She worked several years at MacLain Wood Turning Mill in Philips, Foster Manufacturing Co. in Strong, and then for Farmington Shoe Co., until her retirement in 1981.She made her home in Phillips and Avon for most of her life. She attended the Phillips Congregational Church and was a member of the Hope Rebekah Lodge in Phillips.She enjoyed traveling, and being with her family and friends at Shadagee Apartments. She also enjoyed arts and crafts, flowers, reading and driving her car.She is survived by a son, Edward Smith, and his companion, Betty, of Medway; two daughters, Elizabeth Hill and her husband, Bill, of Phillips, and Katherine Ames and her husband, David, of Kingfield; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and a special friend and cousin, Margaret Herring of Prince Edward Island, Canada.In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a grandson, Derek Searles.Graveside service was held at the Mile Square Cemetery in Avon.
