Chester Greenwood Day just around the corner
FARMINGTON — The 32nd annual celebration of the famous inventor of the earmuff —Farmington's own Chester Greenwood— will take place on Saturday, Dec. 6. Event organizers have released a partial listing of this year's events.
Annual Chester Greenwood Parade begins at 11 a.m. through downtown Farmington. Entries for the parade can begin lining up at the Mallet School on Middle Street by 10 a.m. Judging of floats will begin at 10:15 a.m., with cash prizes awarded in four categories: Theme, Originality, Appearance and Youth Group. It was noted that candy throwing will be permitted by individuals walking along the parade route only —not from the floats themselves, for safety reasons. Pre-registration required and the parade is free. This year's theme is "Historic Farmington." As always, earmuffs must be incorporated into each float.
Annual Chamber of Commerce Chili Contest will follow the parade in the Franklin Savings Bank Admin Building on Front Street from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required; drop off your entry between 11:30 to 11:45 a.m. This event is also free. Chester Greenwood cake will be served after the chili contest.
The Chester Greenwood Flag Raising will take place at the Franklin County Courthouse after the parade at approximately 12:15 p.m.
Horse and buggy rides throughout the downtown area begin at noon until 1 p.m. Pickup and drop off location will be at the Franklin Savings Bank admin parking area on Front Street. This is another free event.
The Farmington Historical Society will be displaying vintage Greenwood items at the Titcomb House, as well as selling holiday wreaths.
The American Legion Post #28 Auxiliary of Farmington will host its annual holiday craft fair at the Legion Building on the corner of High and Middle Streets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with lots of other treasures and plenty of food.
2nd Annual Gingerbread House Contest will be held. Entries may be dropped off at the first floor entrance on Front Street at the Franklin Savings Bank Admin building on Saturday morning between 8:30 and 9 a.m. The gingerbread creations will be on display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The creations will be reviewed by a panel of judges at 9:30 a.m. and ribbons will be awarded. This year's theme is Historic Farmington. Pre-registration is required.
The Farmington Rotary Club's Annual Festival of Trees will be held at the Granary Restaurant (upstairs) all day, with a reception and auction of the trees taking place that evening.
The Polar Bear Club members' annual dip into frigid Clearwater Lake (Industry) will take place at 3 p.m.
