PORTLAND -- Kathleen Whitzell, 64, of Gardiner passed away Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at Maine Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer.

Kathleen was raised in Sutton, Mass. and graduated from Saint Vincent Hospital of Nursing and Saint Joseph's College in Maine. After many years of devoted service she recently retired from Augusta Mental Health Institute as the Director of Nurses.

In addition to being a loving mother, she worked tirelessly and passionately in the nursing field. She was a voracious reader, excellent cook and New England sports enthusiast.

One daughter, Michelle and husband, Greg Brown, survive her; and her most cherished granddaughters, Kaylon and McKensy, the light of her life. She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Jarvais of Sutton, Mass.; and numerous friends and extended family.

Visiting hours and a memorial service were held Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008 at Lindquist Funeral Home in Yarmouth.
