Worm composting talk on tap KINGFIELD — For those who compost in the summer and want to continue during the cold Maine winters, vermicomposting (indoor composting with worms) is an option that Mark Follansbee of WormMainea will demonstrate, showing how easy it is to get started. In addition to a hands-on how-to, you will learn how to build a worm bin for less than $15 and keep your bin trouble-free. Follansbee will also cover feeding and monitoring your bin; harvesting worm compost as a soil amendment; and making worm compost tea. There will be time to answer questions and address rumors and myths about vermicomposting. Follansbee will have compost worms and worm bins available for purchase, as well as free instructions available. Follansbee is a PhD toxicologist and works in Scarborough as an environmental scientist. He has been vermicomposting for nine years and as a hobby operates WormMainea. He has been teaching others to vermicompost successfully since 2005. Maine Mountain Children's House will host this event on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 4:30 p.m. at the school (Kingfield Methodist Church, 51 High Street, Kingfield). For more information, feel free to call the school at 491-2596. This is a free educational event that organizers feel is a must for those interested in composting. |
