Enjoying nature and learning too
To the editor:
Fall is a very beautiful time with the foliage being so gorgeous. Recently, some students from Mt. Abram High School were very lucky to be able to walk around and pick up nature related items during Water Day.
Foliage is a very beautiful and special thing that we are lucky to have in Maine. Every fall we have what everyone calls foliage which is when all of the leaves change colors and fall off the trees. Many people from all over the country come to see our ravishing mountain trees change colors.
Luckily, some students at MTA high school recently had Water Day where they went out and collected things from nature that inspired them to write a piece about nature.
They went out onto some of the local hiking trails and picked up some nature pieces. Many pieces of nature were picked like leaves, sticks and for some lucky students a mushroom or some fungus. The students are now expected to write pieces about the nature items that they collected. This piece also coincides with several visitors from Poland Springs who came to teach us about water and the ecosystem around us.
Mark LaPlante of Poland Spring bottling company recently visited MTA to teach the freshmen about the stream right next to Mt. Abram. He showed the students many things including how to figure out the velocity of a river and how to get a proper measurement of the rivers' depth.
Even though it was a wet and cold day, the day was not lost and many things were learned. Thanks, Delani Littlefield Mount Abram High School Freshmen Salem
