High school students assigned laptops
RANGELEY — The Rangeley Lakes Regional School Board of Education met Oct. 14 with members Ginny Nuttall, Harold Schaetzle, Pam Ellis, Mary Vacarro and Barbara Burgess present, according to the meeting's minutes released recently.
Also present were: Phil Richardson, Superintendent; Sherry Connally, Principal; Rachel Freihoff-Lewin, Student Representative to the board; and 19 members of the public.
After the meeting was called to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, the previous meeting's minutes were accepted.
Principal Connally noted that the Varsity Girls' Soccer Team made the playoffs. She also announced that all high school students now have a laptop assigned to them.
Nuttall provided an overview of the consolidation plan meeting held with MSAD #44 and indicated that more in depth information would be presented at the Union #37 board meeting on Oct. 15.
A second plan to alleviate traffic flow problems was also presented. After much discussion, it was decided to table the plan until other suggested steps were taken.
Principal Connally apprised the board that kindergarten numbers had swelled to 22. Michelle Laliberte, kindergarten teacher, indicated that of the 22, 10 were below grade level when tested. A number of those present then spoke to the issue.
Superintendent Richardson noted that there was not enough money in the Instruction Account to cover the cost. However, he noted that there was unanticipated revenue within the budget but that this could not be expended without taxpayers' approval.
The Superintendent was authorized to advertise for an anticipated one-year kindergarten position and to move forward with a public meeting to seek taxpayer approval to expend unanticipated revenue taken in during school year 2008-2009.
Erin Smith requested that the board approve a choir trip to New York City that would take place in March of 2009. One day of school would be missed.
The Superintendent was asked to place on the agenda for the next meeting board policies dealing with trips, fund raising, etc.
It was moved by H. Schaetzle and seconded by B. Burgess to enter into Executive Session concerning a complaint against a person or persons, after which the meeting was adjourned.
