(Laura Dunham photo) KINGFIELD — With a small crowd looking on, Brian Hatfield, acting as the Commander of the Norton/Wuori American Legion Post #61, along with several other members of the Legion, conducted a disposal of unserviceable flags on Veterans' Day at the monument in the center of town.

Hatfield told those present, "We are presenting flags of our country which have been inspected and condemned as unserviceable. They have reached their present state in a proper service of tribute, memory and love."

"A flag may be a flimsy bit of printed gauze or a beautiful banner of finest silk. Its intrinsic value may be trifling or great, but its real value is beyond price, for it is a precious symbol of all that we and our comrades have worked for and lived for and died for... a free nation of free men, true to the faith of the past, devoted to the ideals and practices of Justice, Freedom and Democracy," Hatfield said.

Following an assembly of the color guard, the flags were escorted to a burn barrel in the front of the monument where they were burned by William Gillespie.

Other Legion members taking part in the ceremony were: Acting First Vice Commander Bert Dyer; Curtis Johnson, flag bearer; Jim Williamson, Sgt. At Arms; David Holmes, Second Vice Commander; Bill Gillespie, flag burner; and Roger Belanger in charge of the music —all are members of the Norton Wuori American Legion Post.

Following the ceremony every one returned to the Legion Hall for refreshments provided by the members of the Auxiliary.
