Strong leads way to perfect season
Strong, 51 - Rangeley, 34
STRONG -- Quite possibly the toughest game of the season for the Strong Indians, but they were able to defeat the Rangeley Lakers 51-34 on Nov. 14 to conclude their perfect undefeated junior varsity basketball season. Strong's fifth and sixth graders earned themselves a 4-0 record.
Offensively, Strong worked hard with nine out of 15 players scoring. Indian Quinton Hanna not only led his team in points scored with 18 on the board, but also led in assists.
Additionally, Strong's ability to get up and down the court, as well as their impressive teamwork, was a key to this win.
Indian Trevor Brackley was second in individual scoring with 14 points.
For Rangeley, Randy Thompson was the one to stop as Strong's greatest concern was him with the ball. Thompson put up an impressive 20 points that afternoon.
Strong outscored Rangeley 17-10 for a first quarter lead and outshot the Lakers 16-10 to take a 33-20 lead to end the half. A Strong 14-6 run in the third quarter secured the lead for the Indians. An 8-4 scoring advantage for the Lakers was not enough to come within reach.
Strong's Bryson Walker (7 points) made the only threepoint shot in the first quarter to erupt a home crowd.
"This was a tough game for both teams, easily the toughest game that Strong has had this season," Coach Amy Cummings explained after the game. "Playing good defense, especially on Rangeley's Randy Thompson was crucial for Strong."
