REAR VI EW

2008-12-03 / Irregular Regulars

Sporting a new cover layout (new, that is, since the last issue we have in our archive —more than a two-year gap), the Sept. 19, 1975, Vol. 9, No. 1 issue of the Sugarloaf Irregular boasted Waylon Jennings on the cover.

"In this issue, our first under new management, we'll try to explain what we have in store for you," noted an entry in the contents on Page three, under the heading "Sawdust."

Turning to that page, we read under Publisher's Corner: "Well, I am back after a five-year leave of absence and can say one thing for sure—that is my writing has not improved." With this issue, Ed Rogers was back in the publisher's chair and planning to address a few "issues" he felt the newspaper needed addressing. First he appointed Howard Smith as Editor and then hired Kris Smith to run the business office. He continues, "It is our hope to really upgrade the paper, bring back some of the fun style of older Sugarloaf days and definitely cover important news events in our three towns of Stratton-Eustis, Carrabassett Valley and Kingfield." The subscriptions were changing too: "More issues, faster at a lower price" —eight bucks a year for 36 issues, mailed second class (instead of third as it had been.)

A great deal of preparation was underway for the "Return of Benedict Arnold." A reenactment of General Arnold's 1775 expedition to Quebec was to pass through the area. The festivities included parades, musket shoots, suppers and more. The paper had a detailed itinerary for the towns of Kingfield and Stratton.

A photo of a helicopter was accompanied by a caption explaining that it was pouring concrete for the towers of a chairlift that was to replace No. 3 T-bar. "No more airplane rides on Ts that don't reach the ground, no more ruts to fight."

"The softball season is over. Tennis was an aberration. Golf takes too much time. Sailing was alright until the lake dried up. Hang gliding is too tame. Yawn. It was beginning to look like a dull autumn." So begins a story on the World Mud Bowl Series first set of games in Vermont. Three teams played: Valley Rats 3-0, Mt. Washington 1-1 and Jay Peak 0-3.

Among the advertisers in this issue were: Woodlord Factory Outlet Shop in Kingfield, Makers of Fine Planters Since 1974 and Sky Truckin' Inc. of Sugarloaf USA, hang-gliding instruction.

In addition to Rogers and both Smiths, the masthead included Frank Rogers, Tobey Levine, Joyce Peters, Mike Sheridan, Sue Davis, Kathy Leen, Paul Laliberte, Chip Carey and Mike Gerstner.
