CV police busy as mountain opens
WESTERN MOUNTAINS — The following are summaries of local law enforcement agencies' activities last week.
Carrabassett Valley Police
At the Carrabassett Valley Police Department last week, Police Chief Scott Nichols investigated a report of a traffic accident on Webber Street. Investigation revealed that a husband and wife had been arguing just prior to the accident. Both parties fled the scene. The driver was eventually found and charged with driving to endanger and failure to report the accident, said Nichols.
Last week's opening at the Sugarloaf resort and the season's first major snow fall resulted in police officers responding to some 88 calls for assistance.
Officers responded to 12 burglary alarms, 13 residential
unlocks, two fire alarms and 13 low temperature calls. Officer Gaudet provided several hours of traffic control for a tractor trailer that was stuck on Bigelow Hill just north of the access road. Officer Henderson assisted the State Police with a traffic stop near the town line of Wyman Township. Officer Henderson also conducted a welfare check on St. Johns Street.
Officer Spencer responded to a car fire located at Parking Lot C and assisted the local fire department. Officer Spencer also investigated a shoplifting complaint involving juveniles at Mountainside Groceries as well as theft of hotdogs at Ayotte's Store. Officer Spencer also responded to a 911 cell phone hang up call in Parking Lot B. Investigation did not reveal a complainant or witness to the incident.
Officer Burnell investigated a report of a suspicious vehicle parked off Sandy River Circle near the well area. Chief Nichols also investigated a suspicious vehicle parked in Ayotte's parking lot. Cpl. Small investigated a single vehicle accident in the "S" curves —the driver was not injured.
The department assisted 11 cars off the road due to the snow storm, said Nichols.
Franklin County Sheriff's Department
At the Franklin County Sheriff's Department dispatchers answered 441 calls for assistance. The corrections officers had 27 inmates in their facility. Seventeen people were arrested.
Deputy Sandy Burke was assigned to a harassment complaint on Ledge Drive in New Vineyard. Dep. Burke was also assigned to a complaint of criminal mischief on Silvernoggin Lane in Madrid. Deputy Heidi Gould responded to a theft complaint on the Foster Hill Road in Freeman. Dep. Burke handled a car/deer accident on Route 4 in Strong. Cpl. Steve Charles was assigned to a car/deer accident on the River Road in Avon. Dep. Dave Rackliffe responded to a theft complaint on Main Street in Kingfield. Sgt. Steve Lowell was dispatched to an animal complaint on Curve Street in Kingfield. Sgt. Lowell was sent to a rollover on Route 27 in Eustis.
Maine State Police
The Maine State Police had a busy week last week. Troopers responded to 75 calls during this time period. They also investigated 14 crashes most came with the first storm of the season. Troopers charged one person with OUI.
Trooper Scott Stevens received a report of tools stolen from a truck on the Public Lot Road in Coplin Plantation. The suspects, two hunters from Leeds, were apprehended and charged with theft and the tools returned. One of the suspects was charged with having a loaded firearm in a vehicle, said Stevens.
In Eustis Trooper Aaron Turcotte responded to an alarm at the Eustis Water District and responded to a trespass complaint on the Old Dead River Road.
In Avon Trooper Turcotte investigated an unattended death.
In Lexington Trooper Jon Wilson handled a criminal mischief complaint. In Madrid Trooper Steven handled a theft complaint. In Strong Trooper Turcotte investigated a criminal complaint. In New Sharon Trooper Turcotte investigated an assault.
The Trooper Tip of the Week
Troopers are finding a lot of tires with significant wear. Worn tire, said Stevens, are less effective in handling and in stopping with winter road conditions. In order to stay safe and legal, said Stevens, make sure your tires have adequate tread to be effective.
NorthStar Ambulance
It was a busy week for NorthStar Ambulance according to Operations Manager Mike Senecal Avon had two calls, Carrabassett Valley one, Chesterville two, Dallas Plantation two, Eustis two, Farmington 52, Industry three, Jay 14, Kingfield one, Lexington one, Livermore nine, Livermore Falls five, New Portland six, New Sharon four, New Vineyard five, Phillips two, Rangeley four, Stratton three, Strong two, Temple two, Vienna six, Wayne one and Wilton 10.
