CARRABASSETT VALLEY —- A Whitefield man was killed Monday morning after his Geo sedan went out of control on Route 27 and crossed the centerline into the path of an oncoming pickup truck, police said.

Craig Morin, 22, was heading south on the road and the car started sliding and spinning sideways and crossed the line into the northbound lane where the car struck a truck driven by Martin Tomich, 59, of Hackettstown, N.J., Carrabassett Valley police Chief Scott Nichols said.

Morin died instantly in the accident that occurred about 8:15 a.m., Nichols said.

Tomich had a few cuts and refused to be taken to the hospital. At the time, he was heading to Sugarloaf to visit friends and ski.

"It was a very unfortunate situation. The roads were full of slush and he (Morin) was going too fast," Nichols said.

Morin had been in the area visiting his mother in Stratton.
