1930-2008 — He was an avid outdoorsman

KENTS HILL — Guy Eugene Wheelock, 78, of Kents Hill and Kingfield, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 at Winship Green in Bath.

He was born in Orange, N.J. Sept. 7, 1930 the son of Guy E. Sr. and Harriet (Bennett) Wheelock. He grew up in New Jersey but moved to Charleston, Maine to attend Higgins Classical Institute, graduating in 1949. He then went on to graduate from the University of Maine, Orono with a B.S. degree in Forestry in 1953. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Oregon and California as a Jr. Forester for a year.

Guy enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving two years active duty with 16 months in Korea. He was weapons platoon leader, Love Company, Second Battalion, 31st Infantry, 7th Division, 8th Army as a First Lieutenant. He then served 14 years in the reserve and retired as a Major in New Hampshire. He had a total of 36 years in federal service with 30 years as District Conservationist for Sullivan County, N.H.

Guy was a 36-year member of the Elks Club. He was an avid outdoorsman whose passions were alpine skiing, tennis, cross-country skiing and especially hunting and fishing. He loved to ski Sugarloaf. As a younger man, he was a Golden Gloves Boxer and at one time was the youngest Eagle Scout in the U.S.

Mr. Wheelock was predeceased by his son, Scott Wheelock.

He is survived by his wife, Dee Dee Wheelock; his son, Timothy Scott Wheelock and his wife, Susan Denenberg, of Portsmouth, N.H.; his step-sons, Geoffrey Howe and his wife, Tammy, of North Berwick and Michael Howe and his wife, Tracy Shejen, of South Berwick; his step-daughter, Cheryl Moore and her husband, Matt, of Kents Hill; a halfsister, Nancy Isabelle Wheelock Damron, of New York; his grandson, Nico Cesar Wheelock; step-grandchildren, Geoffrey, Joshua and Micayla Howe; along with several nieces and nephews.

There was a memorial celebration of Guy's life at Readfield United Methodist Church, (Torsey Memorial) Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008.

Burial will be at the New Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
