Put worms to work


Mark Follansbee of wormmaines.com shares some of his knowledge of vermicomposting with students of the Maine Mountain Children's House in Kingfield. It takes just a pound of the red wigglers to get things started for indoor worm composting. Worm castings are great nutrient-rich fertilizers for plants and gardens. Recyclers can turn everyday waste such as coffee grinds, newspaper, vegetable scraps, fruit peels and other organics into a useful product. Vermicomposting along with other recycling methods can reduce the amount we send to landfills and transfer stations by as much as 80 percent.
