"Frequency," a seven-block, relief print, is one of several RJ Gray Jr. will be exhibiting at Captive Elements Art House from Dec. 13, 2008 to Jan. 15, 2009. The print is 3.75" x 3.75". LEWISTON -- Printmaker RJ Gray Jr. will be exhibiting a selection of his relief prints at Captive Elements Art House from Dec. 13, 2008 to Jan. 15, 2009. The opening is slated for Saturday, Dec. 13, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the gallery on 25 Landry Road. The public is encouraged to attend and meet the artist.
The works in this exhibition are predominantly small, multi-block relief prints relying on complex backgrounds with simple woodcuts as the subjects.
"Little is more pervasive than imagery," Gray says in speaking about his work. "Images bombard us at record rates, in unprecedented ways. One response to this overstimulation is to take images for granted, another, however, is to focus on a select few. Take an image and focus on it, isolate it in such a way as to require the viewer's full attention —this is my response."
Gray's work has been included in printmaking competitions throughout the U.S., as well as Denmark and Finland. He was listed in Who's Who in America 2003 and 2004 editions. Gray is a member of both the Boston Printmakers' and the Los Angeles Printmakers' societies. He is currently employed at the Original Irregular newspaper in Kingfield and resides in Stratton, his hometown.
This show coincides with gallery's Christmas exhibition and sale.
