KINGFIELD -- A public meeting will be held next Monday, Dec. 15, to discuss some significant changes in the town's ordinance. These changes will affect many people in town.

Members of the Zoning Update Advisory Committee have been meeting overt the past year and are nearing completion of an updated zoning ordinance. After the Comprehensive Plan was approved by the voters, committee chairman David Guernsey and a group of volunteers went to work to update the ordinance and make it contestant with the approved Comprehensive Plan as required.

Kingfield must enact a revised Shoreland Zoning Ordinance by June of 2009. Maine law requires that this ordinance place floodplains within 250 feet of the Carrabassett River and "moderate" or "high" value waterfowl and wading bird habitat in a Resource Protection District. The current ordinance places all land within 100 feet of the Carrabassett in the Resource Protection District, so many landowners will be affected.

The town has notified all owners of land which may sustain an increase in that portion in the Resource Protection District. The committee intends to submit a revised Shoreland Zoning Ordinance to the voters at the March 7 Town Meeting.

For those interested or those who want to learn more about how they'll be affected, the committee will discuss the proposed revisions for the public at its meeting on Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. at Webster Hall.
