Officers respond to fatal accident

WESTERN MOUNTAINS — The following are summaries of local law enforcement agencies' activities last week.

Carrabassett Valley Police

In Carrabassett Valley, Police Chief Scott Nichols said his officers had responded to 72 complaints this past week.

Nichols responded to Fir Street to a call of domestic violence where a suspect had locked the doors and wouldn't let officers in. After 12 hours the officers talked the man out and he was arrested for domestic violence, driving to endanger and assault; he was taken to Franklin County Jail where he later made bail. The man was from Illinois and had recently moved to the resort area, said Nichols.

Officers also responded to four burglary alarms, five fire alarms and eight temperature alarms.

Nichols said that officers responded to a fatality on Monday on Route 27 when a 22-year-old Whitefield man was killed and to two other single vehicle accidents on Route 27 with no injuries reported in those. Officers also investigated a single vehicle accident on Route 27 at "Oh My Gosh Corner" when the operator of the vehicle who was suspected of OUI fled the scene. The operator was later found and charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident. Officers also investigated one vehicle that went off the highway on Route 27.

Franklin County Sheriff's Department

The Franklin County Sheriff's Department has had a busy past week with dispatchers answering 505 calls. Seventy-eight of the calls were for NorthStar Ambulance and 23 calls for local fire departments according to Detective Tom White. There were 25 inmates at the jail facility.

Cpl. Nate Bean was assigned to a missing person complaint on the West Kingfield Road in Kingfield. Deputy Sandy Burke responded to a car accident on the West Kingfield Road in Kingfield and a personal injury accident in New Vineyard.

Cpl. Bean also investigated a car off the road in Wyman Township and summoned a person for OUI.

Cpl. Bean also investigated four other cars that had gone off the road between Carrabassett Valley and Stratton. Deputy Burke was sent to Coburn Gore for trucks which were sliding off the highway during a snowstorm.

Deputy Rackliffe arrested a Carthage resident for court and Cpl. Steve Charles took a complaint of harassment in Phillips.

Deputies were sent to 22 car accidents during the week and issued both warnings and citations for traffic violations. Detective White, Cpl. Bean and Dep. Burke were sent to the Cape Cod Hill Road for a missing four year old.

On Nov. 21 deputies were called to an accident on the Tory Hill Road in Phillips. On Nov. 22 deputies responded to an accident on the Streeter Road in Strong, investigated a chimney fire on the South Strong Road, answered a call of a brush fire on the Stratton Road in Rangeley, a vehicle fire on Park Street in Eustis, a chimney fire on the Birch Road in Rangeley and a suspicious incident on Hare Street in Avon.

On Nov. 23 deputies gave out a written warning on the Salem Road in Kingfield.

On Nov. 24 deputies investigated an accident on Route 27 in Eustis and answered an animal complaint on Curve Street in Kingfield.

On Nov. 25 deputies responded to an accident on Route 27 in Kingfield and an accident on Route 27 in New Vineyard where a personal injury was reported. Also on Route 27 the same day another accident with property damage was reported on Route 27 in Kingfield. A vehicle was also reported off the road on Route 27 in Wyman Township. Deputies also responded to a brush fire on the West Kingfield Road in Kingfield, gave out a summons on Route 27 in Wyman Township, responded to a call of a fire on Main Street in Rangeley, responded to an alarm going off on Main Street in Eustis, investigated an accident on Route 27 in Coplin Plantation and responded to a telephone harassment complaint on the Weld Road in Phillips.

On Nov. 26 deputies were called to a car accident on Route 27 in Coburn Gore, a car accident on the Weld Road in Phillips and gave out a written warning on Route 27 in Eustis.

On Nov. 28 deputies responded to a car/deer accident on the Salem Road in Salem, an accident on the Rangeley Road in Phillips, gave out a written warning for speed on Route 27 in Kingfield and another written warning for speed on Main Street in Kingfield.

On Nov. 29 deputies gave out three written warnings on Route 27 in Eustis, another written warning on Route 4 in Phillips, gave out a defect card on Route 4 in Phillips.

On Nov. 30 deputies investigated a car/moose accident on Route 4 in Phillips and served papers on Grace Drive in Strong.

On Dec. 1 deputies responded to an accident on the Foster Hill Road in Strong, an accident on the Norton Hill Road in Strong, an accident on Route 145 in Freeman and an accident on Route 4 in Rangeley.

On Dec. 2 deputies were called to an accident on the Anson Valley Road in New Vineyard, gave out two written warnings on Route 27 in Eustis, investigated an accident on North Main Street in Strong, gave out a written warning on Main Street in Stratton, gave out a summons on Route 27 in Eustis and made a warrant arrest on the Pond Road in Strong.

On Dec. 3 deputies gave out a written warning on Main Street in Strong, issued a summons on Route 27 in Carrabassett Valley, a summons on Route 27 in New Vineyard, a summons on Route 27 in Kingfield, issued a warrant for arrest on Route 27 in Kingfield and gave out two warnings on Route 4 in Strong.

Dec. 4 deputies made an arrest on Main Street in Kingfield.

Saturday, a Franklin County Sheriff's Department official was passing out flyers on the Salem Road in Kingfield warning residents that a man from Massachusetts who is listed on the Maine Sex Offender Registry had moved into their neighborhood.
