United States Customs and Border Protection
According to officers at the United States Customs and Border Protection at Coburn Gore, there was a total of 624 passenger vehicle and 381 commercial vehicles that crossed the border last week. Over 2,000 people were inspected and or examined during this period.
Included in this number was the Scottish ski team: eight skiers and their coach going to Sugarloaf for training and races.
There were no refusals into the country but some fireworks were seized from an individual transiting to the Maritimes. Also seized were some Ritalin tablets in the possession of someone who was not the prescription holder. These are controlled substances prohibited from entry if not in possession of the rightful owner. Custom officers stress that with all prescription drugs keep them in the proper prescription bottle correctly labeled.
As we near the end of 2008, Custom officials remind everyone that by June 9 United States Citizens will have to have a passport or passport card to return from any trip to Canada. You get one more trip to the sugar camps this spring on your birth certificate, but after that, said Custom officials, "you will have to show us your passport or passport card or else."
The Custom and Border Protection officials at Coburn Gore wish every one a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season... just be safe.
New Portland Fire Department
Assistant Fire Chief Brian Rundlett said that four of the fire fighters in New Portland traveled to Vermont to get their new Squad Truck. Also eight fire fighters from that department went to North Anson for mutual aid in a structure fire. Firemen were also called to a car accident on Route 27 with property damage only. That same night the firemen met and put their new squad truck into service.
