Madison hires new economic development director MADISON — Joy Hikel will join the Town of Madison's staff as the Director of Economic Development beginning this week. Hikel, a resident of nearby Skowhegan, will be responsible for attracting businesses to the Madison Business Gateway park and revitalizing the downtown Main Street area. The economic development position has remained vacant for several years due to insufficient funding, but with the TIF funds obtained from the successful Backyard Farms greenhouse, the town can now support the full-time position to promote additional economic opportunities in the community. "We're delighted to have Joy head up our development efforts," noted Norman Dean, town manager. "Her energy, familiarity with the region and knowledge of economic trends and business planning will be a real asset as we push ahead to promote a diverse and sustainable economy in our community." "I am excited to promote Madison to the business community," commented Hikel. "In addition to the low-cost electricity, business park and pedestrian-friendly downtown, there are a number of things in terms of infrastructure and incentives that the community has gotten right —and it should be on the top of anyone's list who's starting or expanding a company." Hikel has voiced a strong commitment to bring jobs that will provide above-average wages and a desire to engage youths in development planning. "We have to have educational and work opportunities that allow our children to grow and prosper right here — and draw new families to the area as well." |
