As the Ski Turns
Things can get a little raucous at a Mt. Abram basketball game when you have Lorraine and Sid Savage and most of their family in the crowd. Last Thursday, Lorraine was joined by Ruth White and they had a grand old time whooping, hooting and hollering. We were sure those two were going to come down off the bleachers and take over the coaching at one point as they were having so much fun!
Speaking of coaching, we were pleased to see Coach Mike Deraps' father, Phil, make it to the MTA boys' game on Thursday. It was wonderful to for us to see old friends stop by to say hi to Phil, and watch as many members of the boys Varsity team went over to shake his hand. Mike was pleasantly surprised to see his dad, who came over from Edgewood Nursing home to watch Mike coach.
The Mt. Abram Boosters did an awesome job with concessions this season, thanks to all the parents who donated their delicious food! Carrie Abbott said that she has received many compliments and has been told on more than one occasion that MTA has the best boosters' concessions around.
Happy Birthday to Kevin Smith, of Kingfield, who will turn 12 on Monday, Feb. 9… he'll probably grow another inch taller between now and then too!
Michael Faraday, of Carrabassett, is quite upset that they took away his "office" at Wal-Mart. We ran into him last week, as he was getting ready to put a note in the store's suggestion box. Apparently Mike used the telephone booth in the store's entryway quite often. No, Mike is not Superman; he just doesn't have a cell phone. Madi… can you do something about that?!?
Hey Mike, we're willing to talk about joining forces and publishing a "Western Mountains Phone Booths" guide if you'll help with the research!
The Pineland Fiddlers, of which Leon Robie of Kingfield is a member, is planning a trip to Ireland this June and for months the kids have packed their schedules with concerts and dances, bake sales, bottle drives and busking to raise enough money to get themselves there. Barnes and Noble has generously agreed to share 10 percent of their sales with the Fiddlers when buyers make purchases online between January 30 and February 5. All you have to do is go to www.bn.com/mybookfair and enter the Bookfair ID #449488 when you are prompted at check-out.
Our local weather maven, NOAA weather observer
Betty Wing, of Eustis, called Monday to fill us in on the recent storm statistics. Betty recorded 13.9 inches of snow last week (there was only .85 of precipitation), bringing the total snowfall for January to a whopping 37.6" (last year, January saw 28.6" in total). Nearly 40" seems like a lot, but don't forget that last February we had 52" of snow! Sunday, Betty recorded 1.3" of light and fluffy snow by the time it stopped at noon.
