The Carrabassett Valley Police Department had a busy week according to Police Chief Scott Nichols. Officers there responded to 108 requests for service including nine burglary alarms, 21 unlocks, five parking complaints, four citizen assists, eight fire alarms and 24 low temperature alarms.

Officers investigated four traffic accidents and assisted four motorists.

According to Police Chief Nichols, excellent police work by one of his officers on Friday led to the recovery of four pairs of skis stolen from the Base Lodge at the Sugarloaf Mountain Ski Resort.

During the afternoon, Sgt. Randy Walker received a complaint from a Sugarloaf guest that somebody had stolen their skis, which had been left at the "beach area" of the Base Lodge.

Once Sgt. Walker received the description of the skis, he started searching the parking lots. At that point Sgt. Walker saw a young man walking with a pair of skis fitting the description of the stolen pair. Sgt. Walker followed the young man to a parked SUV in Parking Lot C where three other young men were waiting for their friend. Once there, Sgt. Walker started to question the man about the skis. While interviewing the man, Sgt. Walker received three additional ski theft complaints. The man then opened the rear door of the SUV and the officer discovered six additional sets of skis. Two of the young men, said Nichols, continued to deny to Walker stealing the skis until the additional complainants were asked to come to the SUV's location and identify their skis, which they did. At this point, said Nichols, his officer had four suspects, four very relieved complainants and over $3,500 in recovered stolen property. According to Nichols, Walker made the correct decision to identify all parties involved and follow up the investigation the next day.

On Saturday, Sgt. Walker traveled to Bingham conducted more interviews and ended up charging two of the four young Bingham men with Class C felony theft. One of the men, Christopher Wallace, had recently turned 18 and was charged as an adult. Another 16-yearold was charged with Juvenile Class C theft.

According to Nichols, Walker has also been busy this week recovering a pair of stolen ski boots and finding several skis that had been reported stolen but were just misplaced.
