PRESQUE ISLE - - As the Original Irregular was being sent to printer this week on Monday, a Web site revealed the Mt. Abram's Emily Luce had just won the women's State Title in giant slalom alpine racing. The Mt. Abram Ski Team traveled to Big Rock on Sunday where the State Class B Nordic and Alpine State Championships are held this year. More ... FARMINGTON - - The Farmington Ski Club and the entire Farmington community embraced middle school Nordic and Alpine skiers in the Class A State Ski Championships and put on an awesome event. Sugarloaf Area Nordic and Alpine teams came to the Class A event for the first time ever having competed in Class B in past years. More ... Mt. Abram, 46 -- Madison, 37 SALEM -- The Lady Roadrunners of Mt. Abram faced Dirigo on Tuesday, Feb. 17 in Augusta in quarterfinal action, after the Irregular went to press. To get to Augusta, the Roadrunners had to face the Bulldogs of Madison again, as they did in the final game of the regular season. More ... CVA freestyle student Nick Rosenberger seems to float in mid-air off the "air hill" jump at Sugarloaf. To go off a large jump like the air hill, requires lots of practice and a progression that begins with trampoline training and continues with many smaller jumps on the mountain. CLINTON, N.Y. — Hamilton College women's basketball team, the Continentals, posted a 1-1 week at home in Liberty League action. The Continentals secured a 67-49 win over Clarkson on Feb. 13, but dropped a crucial match-up to St. Lawrence, 63-56 on Feb. 14. More ... SALEM -- Last week, flyers went home to MSAD #58 middle school kids announcing a basketball program designed to improve the basketball skills and development for boy and girl athletes grades six through eight. The flyer encouraged kids to come out and be coached by Mt. Abram's top-varsity players. More ... Tori Beane of Phillips and Chad Fenwick of Kingfield are the 2009 Foul Shot winners from the NFCL Championship game recently. FARMINGTON — Fundamental baseball instruction for boys and girls ages 7 to 12 is being offered at the 2nd annual Farmington Baseball Clinics Sundays in March. The clinics will be held between 1 and 3 p.m. in the Dearborn Gym at the University of Maine at Farmington, at a cost of $5 for each session. More ... STRATTON — It's that time of year for the Annual Kids' Basketball Tournaments. During the week of Feb. 23 to 27, third through fifth graders at the Stratton Elementary School will be training for a tournament game. On Friday, Feb. 27, 3rd through 5th graders will participate in a co-ed scrimmage against each other. More ... KINGFIELD -- When there were only four girls who signed up for the Kingfield Elementary School Basketball team, Coach Tom McCafferty recruited boys to see if they would be willing to play with the girls. The boys' basketball coach, Tammy Thomas, said she was impressed with the boys who said they would play with the girls to help make up a team. More ... Local girls Elly Bengssten, Emily Listowich, Czari Cochrane, Lee Foden, Leika Scott, Lexi Bullen and Anna Mulhearn at the J4 speed training camp at Sunday River recently. They trained on Monday and had radar guns put on the boys and girls, achieving speeds of up to 61 mph. On Tuesday they did timed runs, but not actual races.
