More ... LEWISTON — Sadie L. White, of Wyman Township, was named to the dean's list at Bates College as a result of her scholastic standing during the fall semester of the 2008-2009 academic year. Franklin County Spelling Bee winners are (left to right): 1st place, Tyler Craig; 2nd place, Mikayla Oswald; and 3rd place, Kristen Ouellette. The bee was held on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the Strong School. There were 14 spellers who participated from the Jay, Rangeley, MSAD #9 and MSAD #58 schools. The students participating from Jay were Louis Krupp, Mikayla Oswald, Kristen Ouellette and Bryana Longley. From Rangeley, participants were Abigail Abbott, Samantha Straub and David Bachelder. MSAD #9 students were Astra Pierson, Max Kay, Kathryn Hayes and Tyler Craig. And from MSAD #58 the students were Jordan Shockley, Matthew Beauregard and Bram Tooker. Cheryl Pike, Judi Richard, Brenda Stevens and Shirley Schrader served as judges for the evening and the Bee Master was Monica Allen. Spelling "contiguous" in the 5th round and then "abdicate" for the win in the 6th round, earned the 1st place finisher, Tyler Craig, the right to represent Franklin County in the Maine State Spelling Bee, which will be held at 1:30 p.m. on March 28, at the Trinity Catholic School in Lewiston.
