Free lessons, rentals at Mt. Jefferson

LEE — For the second year in a row, skiers in Lee were able to get free ski rentals and take free Learn-To- Ski lessons at Mt. Jefferson during the second annual Mt. Jefferson Ski Day on Sunday, March 8.

The free rentals and lessons were provided by Sugarloaf again this year, and the only cost to participants was a lift ticket for the day. Volunteers included Catherine Mallett, Cathy Witherspoon, Tom Butler, Wendy Haug, John Diller, and Jeff Rosenberg from Sugarloaf, and Greg Luetje and Pete Poor from Sunday River. Greg Sweetser, Executive Director of Ski Maine, was also on hand.

Participants and volunteers were even treated to several inches of fresh snow on Sunday morning, keeping snow conditions soft and fun throughout the day.

"This program is a lot of fun for all of us, and it's always great to see new people learning the sport," said John Diller, Sugarloaf General Manager. "Most of us grew up skiing at smaller mountains like Mt. Jefferson, and it's really rewarding to be able to give back to them and help introduce new people to the sport of skiing."

With the success of the Mt. Jefferson program over the past two years, Sugarloaf hopes to expand the program to other local mountains around the state next year and help introduce even more people to the sport.
