Freestyle Championships wrap up 2009 season
CARRABASSETT VALLEY — CVA mogul, halfpipe and aerial skiers were in the hunt for national titles as the final leg of the Sprint U.S. Freestyle Championships converged on Squaw Valley in California, March 27 to 29.
The action kicked off Friday with men's and women's moguls where Alison DiGravio competed in her fourth national championship along with fellow teammate Troy Tully who is making his second appearance at Freestyle Championships. DiGravio and Tully were joined at the top of the mogul course by CVA alumni and US Ski Team members Dave DiGravio '05 and Jeremy Cota '07.
Coming off a second place finish in single moguls and third place in duals at Junior Olympics one week earlier, Alison DiGravio battled down the Squaw Valley Championship course in women's single moguls against members of the U.S. Ski Team and turned in the second best score of a non ski team member, tenth overall. In men's single moguls Dave DiGravio, returning after knee surgery sidelined him last season, earned sixth place from the judges and NorAm overall champion, Jeremy Cota placed 10th.
In halfpipe action CVA seniors Marshall LaCroix, Matt Duhamel, junior Evan Walls, sophomore James Campbell and postgraduate Evan Schwartz took on the nation's top athletes in United States Ski Association rankings. In qualifying action Evan Schwartz carried the second best score, Walls was 9th and LaCroix 10th. Clearing the scoreboard for finals only the top 12 from qualifiers would compete. After two finals runs, Evan Schwartz turned in the fourth best score of the day followed in fifth by Evan Walls and Marshall LaCroix in tenth.
Dual Mogul action concluded the 2009 Freestyle Championships with Jeremy Cota 4th, Dave DiGravio 6th and Troy Tully 12th. DiGravio was 3rd in qualifying rounds. Alison DiGravio finished in 17th, one spot away from qualifying for finals.
