Moonlight snowshoe, supper on tap CARRABASSETT VALLEY — The Carrabassett Valley Outdoor Association will hold its last Moonlight Event, snowshoeing again up to the Poplar Stream Falls Hut for a tour of the facilities, happy hour and dinner, April 4. After dinner participants will return to the parking lot. The trip is approximately 2.5 miles one way and can be somewhat challenging as it climbs upward several hundred feet around the side of Poplar Mt. Organizers say it should take approximately one and a half hours to make the trip on a well groomed trail. It might be possible to walk on the trail depending on the constantly changing conditions, but it's best to plan on snowshoes, or XC skis for those daring to ski back down the mountain in the dark. The cost of the meal at the hut is just $16. The menu will consist of chicken in mushroom sauce over brown rice, vegetable of the day, fresh homemade bread and blueberry crisp for desert. BYO libations and snacks for happy hour. Reservations are necessary and must be made no later than April 2. The group will gather at 3:30 p.m. at the Poplar Stream Trailhead off Gauge Road, which is on the right off the Carriage Road, just beyond Poplar Stream Road. The trek will take about an hour and half, so plan to start earlier if you are a slow hiker. Bring your own snowshoes, headlamp, trail snacks, water and beverage and dress appropriately. As always, carry out what you carry in. Make your reservations with Barb and Bob Briggs at rsbfbriggs@gmail.com or by calling them at 237-2336, no later than Thursday, April 2. Payment for dinner ($16 per person) will be taken at the hut. |
