Ski Museum closed during April, reopen May 6
FARMINGTON — The Ski Museum of Maine will be closed during the month of April, reopening on May 6.
During this time Director/Curator Megan Roberts will attend the week-long International Ski History Congress, as well as upgrade the exhibits, prepare for the opening of the new Theo Johnsen exhibit, and general catch-up.
The Ski History Congress will feature a number of sessions of historical presentations throughout the week. SMOM Board Member Glenn Parkinson will be presenting "Preserving Theo Johnsen," which is the focus of the new exhibit opening at the museum in mid-May.
Johnsen wrote the first American ski book in 1905 and also manufactured skis. When the skis didn't sell well on consignment and were returned, Johnsen decided to make scale models of each ski to sell to the stores. The stores could then sell the skis by taking orders. Through generous donations from enthused individuals, the museum was able to purchase six of these rare, beautiful model skis, which will be on display all summer.
Also during the month of April the museum will be looking for volunteers to help in a number of ways as staff sets up its new display and gets up to date with various projects.
Those who would like to help out anytime Tuesdays through Saturdays between April 13 and 30, let Roberts know when you would like to come; various times will be scheduled according to volunteer availability. Either call after April 4 at 491-5481 or email her anytime at mroberts@skimuseumofmaine.org.
