(Submitted photo) RANGELEY — On April 15, students participating in Doris Mitchell's Intersession Class, along with other teachers, parents and high school students, visited Rangeley Lakes Builders Supply for assistance with their Bird House project. Mitchell had supplied the students with a list of materials that were required to build a bird house.

The students, divided into six groups, had to go around the store and search out the materials on the list, write down the prices and calculate the total expense to complete the project.

Twelve students, grades 3-5, listened as RLBS's Adam MacFawn, resident engineer and contractor salesman, gave a brief history of Rangeley Lakes Builders Supply and explained what the lumber and builders supply had to offer for products and services as well as employment opportunities.

MacFawn went on to explain how to calculate board footage of lumber giving a handout with diagram and description. He then led the students to the pine barn for a tour. After the students had completed the estimate exercise, RLBS presented each student with a tool pouch, safety goggles, tape measure and carpenter's pencil. Along with the gifts to the students, RLBS also donated all of the materials needed to complete the bird houses.

Everyone enjoyed sharing a basket of cookies before heading back to the school to get started on preparation and assembly of their bird house intersession project.

Rangeley Lakes Regional School Intersession, a three day event, is held annually throughout the entire school. The students can choose a variety of projects to participate in. Intersession allows them a practical side to their education opportunities. Some of the projects are conducted at the school while many require off-site visits to local businesses.
