(Laura Dunham photo) KINGFIELD — About 60 friends and relatives gathered on Saturday, April 11 at Nostalgia Tavern in Kingfield to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of Charlie and Joline Raymond Howard of Salem.

Arrangements for the celebration were made by the couple's children, Steve and Stanley Howard of Salem, Stuart Howard of Farmington and grandson, Nolan.

Charlie and Joline Howard were married on April 11, 1959 in Strong. The couple has lived most of their married life in Salem.

Charlie retired in 1996 after serving for 18 years as director of the Salem Economic Ministry with Joline working in the thrift shop at the complex. Charlie was also active in restoring the Salem Community Building and obtaining some $7,000 in grants for the restoration. Charlie also served as secretary of the Salem Cemetery Association and is currently a trustee. He was also an original member of the Salem Fire Department, currently enjoys being on his computer and is an avid reader.

Joline is a member of the Pine Tree Club. Both are members of the Salem United Methodist Church.

A decorated anniversary cake was enjoyed along with a buffet and a toast to the couple by their son, Stuart.

Besides receiving many cards, flowers and gifts the couple received a "recycled" family crystal anniversary plate that originally belonged to Joline's grandparents, Harland and Zilpha Morrell, that was given to them on their 50th wedding anniversary in 1965. It was then given to their daughter, Natalie Morrell Snow, who gave it to Burchell "Bob" and Ginny Morrell on their 50th anniversary in 2003. Now Nat says the Howards must "press on" and give the plate to the next 50th anniversary family member.
