Concerning the article on Page 9, of the April 29, 2009 Irregular, "New life for old gym in Phillips" by Valerie Tucker...

If the gym in question is the one located in what was the old car barn of the old Sandy River, Rangeley Lakes Railroad facility in Phillips, I wonder if the opening date is correct.

I recall playing basketball there when I was a freshman at Phillips HS in 1948. Town meetings and other community functions such as dances were held there when I attended high school. Facilities were sparse. Restrooms were in the nearby station house owned by the American Legion and no showers. There were only two dressing rooms that had to be alternated between the boys and girls teams.

There may be another gym facility in Phillips that was opened in 1954 that I am not aware of. Gordon Pillsbury Phillips
