Two new scholarships announced

AUGUSTA -- The Maine Better Transportation Association recently announced two new scholarships for Maine students pursuing transportationrelated degrees.

Scholarships in the amount of $1,500 are available for Maine residents pursuing degree programs in transportation or construction-related fields. Deadline for applications is May 30, 2009.

The Kenneth W. Burrill Scholarship is named after a past president and energetic champion of transportation investment in Maine. Ken Burrill was a liberal arts major who found a passion for construction, and served in various leadership capacities in the construction industry in Maine. He had a long history with H.E. Sargent and affiliated companies, as well as Bridgecorp. Burrill also had a passion for politics, having volunteered for some of Maine's most prominent politicians, particularly U.S. Senator Susan Collins and U.S. Senator Olympia Snowe. For an application, call MBTA at 622-0526 or go to www.mbtaonline.org.

The Transportation Trailblazer Scholarship is open to any Maine resident enrolled or accepted into a construction or transportation-related degree program in Maine or outside of Maine. Preference may be given to students who have worked in the transportation or construction field, or who have shown other indications that construction or transportation is their career of choice. Degree programs may include but are not limited to civil engineering, construction management, construction trades, marine, rail or aviation studies, heavy equipment operation, diesel mechanic or other such programs. Both scholarships have application deadlines of May 30, 2009 for the 2009/2010 academic year.
