I am so fortunate to live in communities like Avon

To the editor:

My husband, Steve Weiner, passed away suddenly in November. He had worked for the Town of Avon for many years as its tax collector. Steve was known as a person who was sometimes curt, abrasive and often used colorful language to express himself. However, if you got past that external part of my husband, you would find a person who, quietly and without fanfare, did an impressive job for his town and helped many residents of both Phillips and Avon on a host of issues.

My thanks for all the people who worked so hard to make the Steve Weiner Day the great success it was.

A special thanks to the following: our State Representative Tom Saviello for his assistance at the hamburger grill and being present to celebrate this event; the selectmen and administrative staff for the Town of Avon who organized and supported this very special Steve Weiner Day; the Maine School of Masonry (Mr. Mitchell and his crew) for donating equipment and materials to construct a flag pole base and install a 24- foot flagpole with a plaque at the base; the Phillips Fire Department for remembering his past efforts in supporting the department's efforts as a volunteer; NorthStar Ambulance Service for bringing one of its ambulances to the celebration with black bunting in honor and memory of Steve; and to the many others who contributed and attended this celebration —thank you.

I am sure Steve was looking down on us that Saturday, using his curt and colorful expletives on the outside and bursting with pride, thanks and happiness on the inside.

Many thanks to you for an unforgettable celebration. Sincerely, Nancy Weiner Avon
