The Wild Wild West comes to Stratton

(Laura Dunham photo) STRATTON — Hundreds lined the streets of Stratton Village on Saturday for the annual Family Fun Days parade sponsored by the Flagstaff Area Business Association.
According to parade chairman Melody Chase, there were 40 entries in the Wild Wild West theme parade. The parade that made its way down the Main Street was led by Franklin County High Sheriff Dennis Pike followed by the Grand Marshall Joe "Cappy" Perry of Stratton, the author of the new western novel, "The Western Saga Search." Perry was driven in the parade by Jim Boyle who owns a limo service in Stratton.
Judges' Choice for the Best Float with the Best Representation of the Theme went to the members of the Summer Recreation Program. The Best ATV entry went to Bill Kiley. The Best Float went to the members of the Girl Scout Troop and the Best Fire Truck went to the Eu- stis Fire Department with the truck being driven by Guy Woods.
The Judges' Choice Award went to the clown Cricket, with Honorable Mention Award ribbons going to the Stratton-Eustis Lions Club and the Cathedral Pines Campground float. Smokey the Bear even made an appearance.
In the Car Show, the best pre-1950 award went to Richard Thurston. The Best 1950 entry went to Karen Turner. The Best 1960 entry went to Justin Wyman with Maine State Representative Jarrod Crockett riding with him. The Best 1970 entry went to Sid Shane. The Best 1980 went to T. J. Lojas. The Best Truck winner was Skip Reed and the Best of Show went to Richard Thurston.
A big hit was the Way of the Woods tractor trailer which opened into a 70-foot-long museum featuring the heritage of the Northern Forest, provided by TransCanada.
There was a chicken dinner featured on Friday night with music provided by DJ Greg Powers, Uncle Al Sheerin, the Narrow Gauge String Band and songs by Mason Strunk.
On Saturday before and after the parade there were several lawn sales along the road, a food sale to benefit the Somerset Chapter Order of Eastern Star and across the street Fotters Market was giving away free hotdogs and soda for Customer Appreciation. The Dead River Area Historical Society House was also open.
In Pepin's Field the Stratton-Eustis Lions Club was selling hotdogs and hamburgers and the Flagstaff ATV Club members were selling strawberry shortcakes to raise funds for their club, which has over 260 members. There were several games for the children including a sawdust pile.
Kathy Matthews, a local singer, opened the afternoon activities with her rendition of America the Beautiful as hundreds of red, white and blue balloons were released into the air.
The Canoe race on Sunday was won by Sterling Hooke and Mason Hewitt. The winning team on the golf course at Moose Meadows Golf Course went to Bob Benoit, Albert McLaughlin, Rock Newcomb and Ray Heikkinen. Closest to the pin went to Mark Scott and Ray Heikkinen.
Conjuring Carol magic show and the tractor race were cancelled due to the heavy rain that came late in the afternoon. However the sky cleared and the fire works display provided by the Cathedral Pines Campground went off without a hitch lighting up the sky.
