Wing and Lempert on the road again
They are at it again. Kenny Wing of Eustis and Michael Lempert of Freeman recently returned home from a 3,000-mile motorcycle trip to Newfoundland and Labrador on their BMWs.
And this of course, included the ride across Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island just to get to the ferry for the six-hour crossing over the Cabot Strait to Newfoundland.
During their 14-day trip, they were limited to eight days of actual motorcycling around Newfoundland and consequently were only able to sightsee from Port aux Basques up the Northern Peninsula to St. Andrews, L'Anse aux Meadows (the Norse Viking site) and on to Cape Onion. From a high viewpoint at Cape Onion called "Flagstaff Nob" Lempert and Wing could see nine icebergs and two bull moose at one glance.
And then just for the fun of it, they took a ferry ride over the Strait of Belle Isle to Labrador for an overnight motorcycle trip up to Red Bay. The morning they left Labrador it was 43 degrees.
Wing says he fulfilled a lifelong ambition visiting four important archaeology sites in Newfoundland and Labrador. They also report that some of the most beautiful views they saw were on the boat tour of Western Brook Pond, a 540-foot deep fresh water fjord in Gros Morne National Park.
Both say they met some wonderful people in Newfoundland and Labrador and everywhere they went the people were friendly and very helpful.
And what about the remaining two-thirds of Newfoundland yet to see? "We'll do that next year!" Lempert says.
