(Steve Mitman photo) WESTERN MAINE — The post season high school soccer season is before us with both the girls’ and boys’ Mt. Abram teams making playoff contention. Both teams however are stuck in tough competition brackets.

The Lady Roadrunners finished their season with a final Heal Point standing of sixth place and a 6-7-1 record.

The boys had a great year going 9-4-1 for a fifth place seed.

Yesterday, Oct. 27, the Lady Roadrunners traveled to Hale-Dale to take on the third ranked finishers in Western C in quarterfinal action. Results were not available as the Irregular went to press.

Hale-Dale (12-1-1) is a strong team with only one loss and one tie in both regular season match-ups with second ranked Georges Valley (12-0-2). Georges Valley has not lost a game all season. Winners of the quarterfinals will play the winners of a Georges Valley and seventh rank Dirigo (7-7-0) contest.

St. Dom’s leads the Western C ranks with a 12-0-2 record and faced Sacopee (6-7-1) in the quarters.

Orono (11-2-1) and Fort Kent (11-3-1) are the top two contenders in Eastern C.

The Roadrunners under the new direction of Coach Mark Lopez are heading to Wiscasset today, Oct. 28 in the 4/5 quarterfinal match-up. With equal records, this game should be a showdown.

Wiscasset faced the perfect St. Dom’s program with a first place 14-0-0 record twice and took two losses. One of which was a 6-0 shut-out, the other 1-0. Other losses came from Class B Lisbon and second ranked Dirigo who are unbeaten at 12-0-2.

The winners of the quarterfinals will travel to play the winners of St. Dom’s or eighth ranked Livermore (7-5-2). Third ranked Wayneflete with a 12-1-1 record are also contenders in the lower bracket.

Madawaska (11-2-1) and Fort Kent (9- 3-2) are the leaders in standings in Eastern C.

Under the new MPA guidelines, only eight teams make the playoffs in Western C compared to the 13 teams of years of past. If a team can’t lead their class, then a second or third place finish is where you want to be.

In boys, ending with a second place finish would gets a host game against NYA who had six losses and a tie in the regular season. Third place gets a home game against Georges Valley who has not won five of their regular season match-ups. Both would have been home games in the lower bracket.

Likewise a second place finish in the girls’ division would get a host game with Dirigo who also lost seven during the season.

The MTA boys had a higher Preliminary Index in Heal Points over Wiscasset, but fell behind them 77.2321 to 77.8061 in the Tournament Index. The difference would have been a home field advantage in the quarters.

The Lady Roadrunners had little chance to do much leapfrogging in the Heal Point standings.
