2009-11-18 / Irregular Regulars

Since No. 16 is missing in our archive, this week we turn to the June 21, 1978, Vol. 11, No. 17 issue of the Sugarloaf & Rangeley Lakes Irregular.

Titled “The sleeping proofreader,” the following announcement appeared on Page one: “Years free subscription to whomever finds the most typos in this issue. Yes folks, due to complete chaos here at the office, this issue exceeds even our lax limits on typing mistakes. Submit list with guesses as to what scrambled should have been.” (Beginning with the first word in this notice...)

A hint as to what “chaos” the previous announcement referred to appeared next to it. One of the newspaper’s IBM composer’s tiny spring bands critical to its function snapped. But after a trip to Heritage Press in Farmington, the paper was back on track.

Herschel Boynton celebrated his 90th birthday and the newspaper noted: “Thirty years as an engineer on the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad during the early 1900s, 17 years as a turnkey at the Franklin County Jail, 17 years as a court crier at the Franklin County District Court, a mill worker and a selectman.” Saddleback was offering

scenic chairlift rides for $3. Children 7 and under and seniors 65 and older were free. Picnic tables were located at the summit.

A rustic log home in Stratton was offered for sale for $20,000 by the Farmers Home Administration.

Below left are the first place winners in the State of Maine Slalom Championship Canoe & Kayak Race held at Ledge Falls in Eustis: (front, left to right) Hal Jordan of Oakland, Betsy Bowen of Kingfield, Ray Faulkner of Elliot, Russell Dodge, (back) Faron & Tom Fahy of Carrabassett Valley, and the Lemelins of Barrington, N.H. The race consisted of the best out of two runs down a technical course set up with 16 gates along a half-mile course.
