State education curtailment continues
PHILLIPS –- Superintendent Quenten Clark recently said he has received a letter from Department of Education Commissioner Susan Gendron.
We can anticipate next year’s curtailment by multiplying the last curtailment by 1.4 percent, Clark said.
The last curtailment was $68,000. This means that the district may see as much as $95,000 cut from this year’s budget, he explained.
This might represent the budgeted costs of a projected bus purchase or teacher salaries.
Another cut is forecast for the very near future and not included in these amounts, Clark said.
“The commissioner estimates that education will ab- sorb about $10 million from the amount that the legislature is trying to cut,” Clark said. That would mean another $25,000 or so.
“If state revenue does not turn around soon, I think it is likely that there may be further reductions,” Clark said of the current conditions.
Clark made it known that there’s the additional problems of declining enrollment and increasing valuation to be considered along with the commissioner’s letter.
Members of the school board will meet this Thursday, Nov. 19 to discuss these reductions and additional school board matters. The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Mt. Abram High School.
