KINGFIELD –- The town’s planning board met with Poland Spring officials last Monday, Nov. 16. Poland Spring was asked by Administrative Assistant and Code Enforcement Officer Doug Marble to attend the meeting.

The purpose was to update the board on recent Maine Department of Environmental Protection actions.

According to Marble, the MDEP wanted Poland Spring to add a well that would discharge into a monitoring tributary during extremely dry months. The time to charge the tributary would be at the discretion of the MDEP.

Poland Spring officials and hydrogeologist updated the board on their progress.

The logic behind this action is to maintain brook classification records. Environmental engineers use rock baskets to determine micro invertebrate content which classifies the brook’s water quality. Tributary refueling or adding spring water to the water body will help maintain consistent year- round water quality testing results.

In other news, representatives from Jordan Ventures were in to update the board on some DEP requests for their state permit for development on North Main Street. In a minor adjustment, an amendment was made by town planners to adjust the configuration of the infiltration and buffer areas. The DEP wanted defined boundaries and Les Jordan presented the board with such plans. The new plan was approved by the town planners.

Also, representatives from Valley Gas were in to discuss their expansion plans. Owner Bob Luce told planners that they purchased nearby land and wanted to install an above ground 12,000 gallon oil storage tank, Marble said. The installation will include a 34- by 44- foot containment dike to allow for future expansion. “The concrete dike is sized to allow for future expansion of an additional 20,000-gallon storage tank, which we anticipate to take place within the next three years,” the application states.

Marble said that fencing similar to what’s in place now will surround the new structure.

The structure does fall into Site Plan Review by the board.

The proposed town-generated parking lot near the town-owned grey water leaching fields south of the village was also discussed that evening. No further action is required by planners at this time due to its non-commercial intent, Marble explained.
