Christmas festivities, other updates discussed
KINGFIELD –- According to a meeting record, members of the Revitalization Committee met on Nov. 19.
Resident Ellie Meldrum attended the meeting to explain what her group of volunteers have been doing for the upcoming Christmas festivities. She and her group have organized the Christmas lighting which will be held Dec. 4.
The festive evening will include caroling, live nativity scene on Camden National Bank’s lawn and the tree lighting by the post office. It is reported that Santa will arrive at the scene and then will be escorted to the Herbert Grand Hotel where he will hear children’s requests for Christmas gifts. At the same time parents can enjoy a happy hour at the Herbert.
Meldrum reported that Longfellow’s Restaurant will host a Santa’s workshop with crafts for the kids. There will also be refreshments and cookies at the Mason’s Lodge. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
The board expressed its appreciation for her hard work and dedication as a volunteer.
Committee member and elementary teacher Kathy Houston said her fourth grade class is going to decorate windows of the businesses in town that are receptive to their ideas. She is looking for adult volunteers to help clean up afterwards. The second week of December is her target date for this project.
Other updates were provided such as Joan Walton of Androscoggin Valley Counsel of Governments received a contract from the town. Walton is developing a bike and pedestrian plan for some streets in Kingfield.
It was explained that the group is awaiting a quote from AVCOG for her services in writing the grant application for Safeways to School funds to pay for the sidewalks.
A plan to redevelop the first grist mill in town was discussed in depth. The latest plan is for the committee to draft a plan and map of a proposed park behind Longfellow’s. The park area could include a rendition of Kingfield’s first mill. The proposed park will connect to the walking trail on Gilmore Hill with the potential of paved parking areas and new road behind the businesses also included.
This plan and map will be presented to selectmen for permission to put on the next Annual Town Meeting agenda for taxpayers to vote on. The plan and map will also be used for application for planning funds from Community Block Development Grants. It was discussed that some committee members will meet on separate occasions to go over this grant application process.
It was reported that Kiosk in town was ready to be used with one third of the available space already taken by two area real estate companies.
Another one third will be used by other businesses in town with the balance to be used for town notices and non-profit announcements.
A business card area will be available on the sign for an annual cost of $20 for advertisers. All postings will have to go through Camden National Bank where the keys will be located.
A map showing town businesses has been completed by Audrey Gilmore and will also be part of the Kiosk now located on Anni’s Market property.
Meg Ryan, Pat Johnston and MaryBeth Lamont reported their efforts selling Kingfield bumper stickers over past months to raise funds. They said that people were very supportive of the committee’s efforts and donated money above and beyond the $1 sticker price.
