Funds distributed to local athletes

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — The annual meet- ing of the Sugarloaf Regional Ski Educational Foundation was held Friday, Nov. 22. Representatives gathered from the Sugarloaf Ski Club, SRSEF and the Ayotte Fund.

Over $22,000 was presented in various scholarships to help local young athletes with alpine skiing, snowboarding and nordic potential.

Those requesting funds needed to mail their applications in by early November. Each application was reviewed and checks were distributed according to the amounts requested.

The funds involved overseen by the SRSEF are the Dan McKay-Mike Waddle Scholarship Fund, the Amos Winter Fund, the Brook Gallop Fund, the Max Kagan Fund, the Paul Schipper Fund, the Ayotte Fund and Sugarloaf Ski Club scholarships.

The Town of Carrabassett Valley also dedicates a large amount toward helping MSAD #58 students in need of finances to participate in winter sports.

The several boards also decided at this meeting to have a smaller committee meet next November prior to the annual SRSEF meetings. This committee will set up a reviewed sheet to help make the decisions easier and less time consuming.

All applications will need to be sent in before Nov. 1, 2010. The applications are online and are easily attained.

“Until then, get out, cheer on our local athletes and give support any way you can!” Jane Wilkinson, SRSEF, member, said.
