MTA battles from behind, falls short of win

SALEM -– The Roadrunners of Mt. Abram hosted the Rambler of Winthrop on Thursday, Dec. 10.

Down by the score of 15-5 Kenny Moir bounced one off the glass to reduce that lead to eight points. The buzzer sounded to end the first with the Ramblers ahead 19-11.

Barker’s jumper with 4:30 remaining before the half brought the game to within four points 21-17.

Joey Lampron scored his first points in the game in the second to trail by six 25- 19.

Tyler Hupper pulled down an offensive rebound and placed it off the glass with a minute remaining before the half. MTA closed out the scoring with a bounce pass from Barker to a wide open Hupper under the net. The Roadrunners hit the lockers at the half trailing 27-23.

Blood took it to the glass for the first scoring for MTA in the third quarter. Then Lampron scored with 4:30 remaining.

Blood’s fade away jumper brought MTA within six. Then on the other end he stole the ball for a momentum change.

Third quarter ended with MTA trailing 39-31.

The final eight minutes started with two converted free throws by the Ramblers followed by a two point jumper by Barker. But with 7:14 remaining, the Roadrunners trailed by 10.

Barker drained a three pointer and brought them with seven. Then he went two-for-two from the line to get within five. On a 7-0 run, MTA got within three points of tying.

Lampron rebounded and scored after Blood stole on the press to trail by two points.

Several times, MTA climbed back in it to get within one basket from tying, but a late surge from Winthrop did it in for the Roadrunners. Monmouth climbed to a 2-1 record, while MTA remains winless.

Barker was the team high scorer with 21 points followed by Blood who scored 10.

Earlier in the day the junior varsity squad came out and played a tough game which was close toward the end. Winthrop hit a couple that really counted in the end and ran away with a 44-37 win.
