BUCKFIELD — It was a tale of two halves. The Rangeley Lakes Regional High School girls’ basketball team upset host Buckfield’s bid with a 51-28 victory on Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Lady Lakers coach Heidi Deery entered Tuesday night’s game with fears her (10-5) team might too lightly regard the (1-14) Lady Bucks. Buckfield had everything to gain and nothing to lose on Tuesday as they had a capacity “Senior Night” crowd to exhort their team; in addition it was senior Lady Buck’s leading scorer Ashlee Hamann’s final game at home.

Rangeley’s first-half play justified Deery’s fears as the Lady Lakers found themselves locked in a tight contest.

The Lady Lakers, out of synch in the first half, appearing to lacking team cohesiveness, committing a rash of turnovers and shooting just 32 percent, led the scrappy Lady Bucks by only five at the half.

The Lady Lakers began the third quarter with more composure as they settled down, worked the ball around as a team, cut down on their turnovers and doubled their lead to 10 (31-21) by the end of the third quarter. The Lady Lakers’ offense kicked into high gear in the fourth quarter as they outscored their hosts 20-7 for the 51-28 win.

Allie Hammond led the Lakers with 24 points, teammate Chantal Carrier tallied 19 points and Ashlee Hammond netted 15.

The Buckfield victory extended the Lady Lakers winstreak to six games and has the team in fourth place in the MPA Heal standings.
