Selectmen work though fiscal year’s changes

By David Hart Irregular Staff

KINGFIELD –- The selectmen met on Monday, Feb. 1 for a regularly scheduled meeting. The first issue of discussion was a town owned lot and mobile home located at 92 Main Street.

According to Administrative Assistant Doug Marble, members unanimously voted to remove the mobile home listing from realtors.

The selectmen are looking to place the mobile home listing in local newspapers so that potential buyers can purchase and remove the building offsite.

Local advertisements for the sale of the mobile home will go out in April with sealed bids expected to be opened on the first Monday in May. Selectmen were hopeful that the mobile home be removed by June 30, Marble said.

Members agreed that a smaller version of the upcoming Town Report will be printed internally, distributed locally in town businesses and available for pick up at the town office. The report is to guide voters through a town meeting occurring on March 6. The report will be smaller than usual due to the fact that this town meeting, because of a change in the fiscal year, is not the official Town Meeting. With the fiscal year change, the official Town Meeting is expected sometime before the new fiscal year starting on July 1.

“It was basically done to save money, plus we’re going to do the full Town Report for the June Town Meeting,” Marble said.

Additionally, issues were discussed regarding the annual financial reports from town departments as a result of this new fiscal year. As an example, it was mentioned that town departments may need to report financial yearly status for April of one year to April of the next.

Marble reported that the Sandy River Recycling Association has increased its meetings to every other month rather than quarterly because of the economic uncertainties it is facing.

In that line of business, selectman Merv Wilson was appointed as an alternate member of the SRRA board for Kingfield.

Members discussed an upcoming Maine Department of Transportation paving project which includes resurfacing Route 27 from the Wire Bridge to Depot Street. The MDOT asked for the use of posted roads during the off season for their paving subcontractors. Selectmen denied and tabled the request until more information is received.

Marble reported that the town could save up to $200 a month if they switched to digital phone service through their Internet service. A company called Maine Municipal Supply has drafted a proposal that could save the town money. Marble said that MMS also provided a proposal to replace the municipal computers.

Resident Jack McKee was present at the meeting to discuss education subsidy cuts that MSAD #58 will face in the future.

In other business, Marble reported that the local television guide is expected to be changed in the future from its current location to channel 81.

The next regularly scheduled meeting is set for a Tuesday, Feb. 16 due to a holiday on Monday.
