NEW VINEYARD — A young skier from Massachusetts escaped serious injury Sunday afternoon, Feb. 21, after he went into a northbound lane, skidded out of control and landed over an embankment on Route 27.
Franklin County Deputy Sheriff Chris Chase said that Paul Dupre was traveling southbound from Sugarloaf in a 2008 pickup when he apparently hit a soft shoulder, lost control, took down a telephone pole with a transformer and power lines, and blocked Route 27 at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
Deputy Chase said that although Dupre suffered many cuts and bruises he was lucky to be alive since his vehicle was demolished. Deputy Chase added that he cleared the scene about 7:15 p.m. and commended the NorthStar Ambulance crew and members of the New Vineyard Fire Department for their assistance.
Although traffic, which included a tour bus and many skiers coming down from Sugarloaf, was heavy, it was a lucky break that a viable detour was available on either side of the accident, otherwise it could have been a nightmare for the traffic traveling southbound from the resort.
