Each school’s faculty nominates several candidates for this honor each year. The person who is chosen to receive the honor must have demonstrated each of the qualities as defined by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution to an outstanding degree.

Mt, Abram High School

Knapp, daughter of Beverly and Dean Knapp, has earned a place on the honor roll every semester and was inducted into the National Honor Society last year. She earned the St. Michael’s Book Award for Scholarship and Service and was a competitor for the Knowledge Master Open last year as well. She has served her school community as a library technician for the last two years and is on the Dance Committee. She belongs to the Girls’ Book club and is serving as president this year.

However, Knapp is also volunteering her time and energy for community service organizations. She is a charter member of Western Mountain Leos Club the youth division of the Lions Club. She has served as the secretary but currently serves as the president. One important mission of this club has been to provide “fire bags,” which contain essential items to provide for families that have suffered the devastation of losing their home to fire, to the six local fire departments for distribution. This club raises funds for Camp Sunshine, which is for children with serious illnesses.

Knapp has been an active member of the Community Playhouse Misfits and her church youth group. She was a member of the local Girl Scout troop for six years. She has helped pack food baskets for low income families during various holiday seasons for at least 12 years. She helps raise funding for the Lance Corporal Scott Paul Park in Strong during the Halloween holiday by volunteering at the Haunted Train Ride. She has participated in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life for the last three years.

During the summer season, Knapp has worked for Economic Ministry sorting donations. Her other job has been for a jewelry making business, Lani K’s MacramĂ©. She has been accepted at the University of Maine at Farmington in the Integrated Studies Program where she intends to explore her career possibilities. She wants to find a way to combine her love of writing, reading and art with her desire to help others.

Rangeley Lakes Regional School

Christensen, daughter of Nini and Peter Christensen, has demonstrated her leadership skills by serving as the 2010 class treasurer for her freshman, sophomore and senior years and as vice president for her junior year. She was inducted into National Honor Society as a sophomore and is an active member of her chapter. As a junior, she was on the math team, earned the National Scholastic Art Award Silver Key and the Optimus Scriptor Award and attended the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.

Christensen’s participation in sports teams at RLRS includes one year as the varsity basketball manager where she was named East-West Manager of the Year, three years each on the varsity ski team and the varsity softball team and four years on the varsity soccer team serving as the captain for the last two years. As a junior, she participated in the Dutch Soccer Academy Italia Tour. In 2009, she was named to the Maine Coaches All State Western Team and the East-West Class D All Conference Team.

Christensen has served in many community organizations. She has been a member of girl scouts for two years, the Outdoor Club for three years and both the Interact Club and the Green Club for four years. Both of these last two clubs are purely community service oriented. Her service credits for Rotary include volunteering for the annual Halloween parties and being a server at the annual cookout, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. She volunteers at Saddleback Daycare, at elderly housing bingo games, for local yard improvement, scenic by-ways and the RLRS Grandparents Day. In 2009, she served as the Fit and Fun Captain, helped with the Summer Soccer Program and volunteered at Acadia National Park.

Christensen worked for Sunrise View Farm as a commercial berry picker and farmer. She has been employed by Saddleback Mountain as a ski instructor and she provides child care in her community as well. Her future plans are to use her love for children and art to inspire young children through her art.
