He was born June 15, 1933, in Natick, Mass., the son of John S. and Harriet W. (Dunning) Dunning. He was a graduate of Kingswood High School in Simsbury, Conn. and earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Oberlin College in Ohio. On Jan. 5, 1983, he married Dorothy O’Toole Lynch in Granby, Conn. In 1985, they purchased a camp in Caratunk. It was here that he could enjoy shooting nature with only his camera, or teaching others the wide variety of bird calls. By 1990 he and Dottie had retired to Starks and subsequently, Farmington.

He enjoyed traveling, particularly in the United States, sailing, running and playing tennis, the fiddle and chess. While in Connecticut, he raised Christmas trees and relaxed by working in his extensive yard. He was also a private pilot.
