AUGUSTA — Stewart Ward “Stu” Dunning, 76, of Farmington, passed peacefully in the early morning hours of Sat. Feb. 27, 2010, at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Augusta.

He was born June 15, 1933, in Natick, Mass., the son of John S. and Harriet W. (Dunning) Dunning. He was a graduate of Kingswood High School in Simsbury, Conn. and earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Oberlin College in Ohio. He entered the United States Air Force as an enlisted person and for a brief time, upon his return from duty, was employed in the family business, Dunnings Sand and Gravel of Farmington, Conn.

He was later employed at Harvard National Bank and eventually became the President and CEO of TPC Teleprocessing Corporation of Granby, Conn.

On Jan. 5, 1983, he married Dorothy O’Toole Lynch in Granby, Conn. In 1985, they purchased a camp in Caratunk. It was here that he could enjoy shooting nature with only his camera, or teaching others the wide variety of bird calls. By 1990 he and Dottie had retired to Starks and subsequently, Farmington.

He enjoyed traveling, particularly in the United States, sailing, running and playing tennis, the fiddle and chess. While in Connecticut, he raised Christmas trees and relaxed by working in his extensive yard. He was also a private pilot. Stu will be remembered as a humble, selfmade, modest man who had a generous heart and was noted as “not being one to complain.”

He is survived by his wife, Dottie of Farmington; two sons, John Dunning and his wife, Judith, of Stow, Mass.; and Dave Dunning and his wife, Lisa, of Portland, Ore.; two daughters, K. Jeanne Dunning of Chicago, Ill. and Elizabeth “B” Kaplan and her husband, David, of Kennett Square, Pa.; a step-son, Stephen Lynn of Vernon, Conn.; and a step-daughter, Kimberly Najarian and her husband, John, of Scarborough; one brother, R. Morton Dunning and his wife, Mary, of Florida and Burlington, Conn.; two sisters, Harriet H. Dunning of Texas and Ann Woodward of North Carolina; two grandchildren, Natalie Kaplan and Abigail Kaplan.

He was predeceased by his parents; and a brother, David Dunning.

Services were held Monday, March 1, 2010 at the Wiles Remembrance Center in Farmington.
