Kingfield student’s play to be performed
FARMINGTON — On March 12 and 13 Mount Blue Theater Company will present a play written and directed by student Tim Reid, of Kingfield, as part of the Mt. Blue One Act Festival. The play, “ttyl” (Talk to You Later), examines a future world that seems all too possible: a society where people have discarded speech in favor of social networking and texting. The entire world is literally silenced by technology. Only a few outcast citizens cling to the forgotten art and desperately search for a way to bring back what they feel is the world’s only true way to express itself. “ttyl” forces the audience to think and come to its own conclusions about how relevant the play actually is.
The story revolves around James (Matt West), an aging man who cares deeply about preserving speech and has worked tirelessly to return it to the world. However, most of his efforts are in vain and the play opens to find him depressed and facing the possibility that he might lose everything he’s loved. His daughter (Amy Wheeler) is leaving his side to join the rest of society and his only friends are nearing their final years. One last time he calls out in despair.
The play also stars Andreas Wyder as Sim0n51194 (oh we’ll just call him Simon), a young man who grew up texting, who is fascinated by James and his lifelong quest. The play is serious but ultimately uplifting, with a tiny pinch of comedy mixed in. All ages are welcome to attend.
The night features two other plays: “Story Theater” directed by Robin Lisherness presented by the Mt. Blue Middle School and a production of “Clue” adapted and directed by student Garret Goodridge and performed by Mt. Blue teachers. It should prove to be a fun night of play-going for all.
The plays will be held at Mt. Blue High School beginning at 7 p.m.
Admission is $2.50 for students and $4.50 for adults. Tickets may be purchased at the door.
