Family Winter Carnival returns

2010-03-10

RANGELEY — This year organizers are going to try something new at Orgonon’s Family Winter Carnival. Have you ever gone sliding in the moonlight? Seen the Space Shuttle cross the sky? Identified the Constellations?

Whether you answer yes or no to these questions those planning this year’s carnival are sure attendees will have a good time. This event is free of charge, and will be held on Friday evening, March 12 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Conference Center at the Wilhelm Reich Museum on Dodge Pond Road.

On hand will be a small sky theater, a recorded lecture on the spring and winter sky and literature on what to look for as the winter constellations pass from view and the spring constellations appear on the horizon. There will be two or three telescopes set up for further investigations into the night sky and attendees are welcome to bring their own.

The Space Shuttle is scheduled to fly over at 7:06 p.m. coming in from the NW to NNE. It will be low in the sky at 20 degrees but if the night is clear observers should be able to see it for two minutes.

The smaller children will be able to have their own antics with a Ball Tent, and Jump & Slide inside and all ages can participate in outside activities.

There will be a supervised bonfire outside on the sliding hill for warmth, light and cooking. There will also be a fire in the fireplace for cooking. Food will be available for a donation or participants can bring their own.
