NEW PORTLAND -– Tones rang out on Thursday, March 4 to four fire fighting communities when it was reported that an old mill in New Portland was aflame.

Thanks to an early spotter and a quick response by the New Portland Fire Department, no serious threat was posed. There was a small swell in a 16-foot exterior wall of a former wood turning mill, but fire fighters were able to quickly suppress the flames.

According to fire officials, the fire was listed as minor and one New Portland tanker truck with the rated capacity of 3,000 gallons of water was able to overcome the potential of dangerous flames.

Although the event was conquered quickly, nearly 50 mutual aid responders arrived at the scene between 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. that evening.
