Former Penobscot chief to visit KES

2010-03-10 / Sports & Outdoors

KINGFIELD — Barry Dana of the Wabanaki tribe, and former Penobscot Nation Chief (2000 to 2006), will be at Kingfield Elementary School Wednesday, March 10 to spend the day.

Dana’s goals are to convey multiple aspects of the Penobscot and Wabanaki cultures —both present day and historically, to break down stereotyping about Native Americans, and to provide teachings about the relationships among people and their environments.

His workshop and demonstrations will cover native culture and art, tribal government, drumming, songs and dance, and much more.

Among the items he will bring with him to the gym, will be a birch bark wigwam, handmade moose hide drum, talking stick and root club, moose caller, baskets and more. For more info, call the school at 265-4132.
