Rangeley library’s catalog online

RANGELEY — The Rangeley Public Library recently announced that patrons can now search for books and movies at the institution without even getting out of their slippers.

With the installation of the new Destiny software program, anyone can see what the Rangeley Public Library has from any computer with Internet access by clicking on the Library Catalog link at www.rangeleylibrary.com.

“Public libraries need to really focus on convenience, patron service and selection. What this new program does is allow people to check what we have in the library 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” explained Director, Martin Gagnon. “Technology and the Internet make it possible for us to increase our ability for people to use the library when it is convenient for them without necessarily increasing our hours.”

Those who have a Rangeley library card will be able to do many additional functions. Patrons can now view their checkout history, renew their books, check on their due dates, and reserve books all from the Library Catalog link on the Web page.

A complete set of directions on how to use the program can be found by either clicking on the Library Catalog Instructions link on the Library web page or by coming into the Library to pick up written instructions. Patrons do need to know their library card number to establish an account and perform some of the functions.

“We are really looking to take advantage of technology to increase our services while still remembering as a staff and organization that friendly personal service is important. The bottom line is that the library is here to serve the community in whatever form that service may take,” said Gagnon.

“We really want to thank the family of Dr. Patrick Ashley and all those who gave in his memory for allowing us the opportunity to purchase this new program with the funds so graciously given. They have made a wonderful contribution to the community.”

The use of technology to make items more accessible continues to be a priority according to Gagnon. In May, patrons will be able to download audio books right from the Rangeley Public Library Web page. The partnership with the Maine InfoNet Download Library will give patrons access to over 900 titles at no cost to the patron. “What makes this great for our patrons is the different formats on which the audio books can be downloaded,” said Gagnon. Many of the titles can be downloaded onto a patron’s computer, their iPod, or their MP3 players.

For assistance with these on-line functions, patrons can call the library at 864-5529.

As with any of the library’s services, the staff is always available to help.
